Roofing Equipment & Tools Checklist for a New Crew

Everything a new roofing crew needs to buy -- fall protection, tear-off tools, nailers, and more -- with realistic startup cost ranges.

Fall Protection & Roof Safety

Non-negotiable given the nature of the work and OSHA requirements for roof work above 6 feet: full-body harnesses (one per crew member), rope grabs, lanyards and anchor points, roof brackets and toe boards, extension ladders rated for the job, hard hats and safety glasses.

Tear-Off and Installation Tools

Roofing shovels/tear-off forks, pneumatic or coil nailers with an air compressor, chalk lines and tape measures, utility knives and spare blades, a magnetic nail sweeper for cleanup, and tarps for protecting landscaping and gutters during tear-off.

Hauling and Disposal

A dump trailer or roll-off dumpster service for old shingle disposal is one of the bigger logistics decisions a new crew makes — owning a trailer costs more upfront but saves per-job dumpster rental fees once you have enough volume.

Inspection Tools

A drone meaningfully speeds up roof inspections and estimates and has become increasingly standard for insurance-claim documentation, though a ladder and the willingness to physically walk a roof remain the baseline every inspector needs.

Software

Most roofers run on subscription software for estimating/proposal generation, satellite measurement reports (which remove the need to manually measure every roof), and CRM/project tracking.

How Much to Budget

Realistically $6,000-$20,000 for a first crew's tools and safety equipment, not including a vehicle or trailer. Fall protection and nailers should be bought new; general hand tools and ladders can reasonably be bought used if properly inspected.
